German Chamomile Essential Oil is the steam-distilled essential oil of Matricaria recutita, in the Asteraceae family,. It is drawn from the flowers of the plant. It is famous for its deep blue color, which forms during distillation.
About the oil
German chamomile essential oil is distilled from the flowers of Matricaria recutita. It is one of the few essential oils with a deep blue color, which comes from chamazulene, a compound formed during distillation from a precursor in the flowers. Its other major constituents are alpha-bisabolol and the bisabolol oxides.
German chamomile is a different species from Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile): the German oil is deep blue and more bitter, while Roman chamomile is pale yellow and sweeter and more apple-like. Because of its very low yield, German chamomile oil is sold in smaller bottles than most oils.
