What is kratom?

Kratom is the dried, ground leaf of Mitragyna speciosa, a tropical evergreen tree native to Southeast Asia. The leaves contain a family of alkaloids — mitragynine and 7-hydroxy-mitragynine being the two best-studied — that have made kratom a traditional botanical for centuries in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Papua New Guinea.

The tree itself is a member of the coffee family (Rubiaceae). Commercial kratom is made the old-fashioned way: mature leaves are hand-harvested, de-stemmed, dried, and milled into a fine powder. Almost everything that distinguishes one kratom product from another, the vein color, the strain name, the grind, comes down to when the leaf was picked and how it was dried.

Red, green, and white vein kratom — what's the difference?

The vein color refers to the color of the leaf's central vein at harvest, which corresponds loosely to the leaf's maturity. The same tree can produce all three depending on when the leaf is picked and how it's dried.

• Red vein — the most mature leaves, typically dried the longest.
• Green vein — harvested mid-maturity, between red and white; often the everyday pick.
• White vein — younger leaves, often dried indoors away from light.
• Specialty / yellow — usually a blend or an extended-drying technique. Each shop's specialty is its own thing.

Kratom strains: Maeng Da, Bali, Hulu, Sumatra

Strain names refer to the region of origin or the cultivar lineage, not the alkaloid profile directly. Maeng Da ("pimp grade" in Thai) is a marketing term that's come to mean a high-alkaloid select. Bali, Sumatra, Malay, and Hulu Kapuas all reference geographic origin.

We don't claim that any one strain is "stronger" or "better" — alkaloid content varies batch to batch. That's why we lab-test our kratom and post the report on request.

How kratom strain naming actually works

Put the two systems together and you can read almost any kratom label. The first word is usually the vein color (red, green, white). The second is the origin or lineage: Bali, Malay, Sumatra, Hulu Kapuas, Thai. So a Red Bali is mature, longer-dried leaf in the Bali style, and a Green Hulu is mid-maturity leaf from the Kapuas Hulu river region of Borneo. A strain name tells you two things, what the leaf looked like at harvest and where or how it was grown. That's all it tells you.

What a name does not describe is an outcome. There's no governing body making sure one vendor's Red Bali matches another's, and alkaloid content shifts with soil, season, and drying technique even within a single region. Two bags with identical names can be very different leaf. That's why the batch matters more than the name, and why a good vendor should be able to tell you something concrete about the specific lot you're buying.

"Lab tested" gets stamped on a lot of kratom without much behind it, so here is specifically what our panel covers:

• Identity and potency: confirms the material is genuine Mitragyna speciosa and quantifies the mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine content.
• Heavy metals: lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury, measured against FDA action levels.
• Microbial contamination: total plate count, yeast and mold, salmonella, and E. coli.

Testing is performed by third-party, ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratories, not by us in-house, which is the arrangement you should want. Certificates of analysis are available on request: request a COA and we'll send the lab report for your product.

Kratom grind and packaging: what to look for

You can learn a lot about kratom before a lab ever sees it. Well-processed powder is milled fine and consistent, with an even color and no visible chunks of stem or vein (stem and vein material bulks up weight but isn't leaf). It should smell green and planty, never musty; a damp or sour smell suggests the leaf wasn't dried properly, which is exactly the condition that lets mold take hold.

Packaging matters just as much, from any vendor. Look for a sealed, light-blocking bag with a clear product name and a lot or batch identifier printed on it. That little lot code is what lets a COA be matched to the actual bag in your hand; without it, a lab report is just a nice PDF. We sift and package our kratom in-house at our Portland shop and label it by hand.

Where to buy kratom: how to vet any vendor

There is a great deal of kratom for sale online, and almost none of it comes with a lab report attached. So the real question isn't where to buy kratom — it's who will show you their work. We'd rather you buy from a careful competitor than a careless anybody. Wherever you shop (including here), ask these questions before you order:

• Can you show me a COA? The answer should be yes, quickly, from a third-party accredited lab, and the report should be recent and reference a lot number you can match to your product.
• Where does the kratom come from? A vendor should be able to name the country and region of origin and describe how the leaf gets from grower to shelf. Vague answers usually mean a reseller who has never seen the supply chain.
• Do you verify age? Responsible vendors enforce an age minimum at purchase (we require 21+). A shop that will sell to anyone with a card isn't running the rest of its business carefully either.
• What food-safety practices do you follow? Ask about HACCP food-safety protocols, and whether any certification body (like a state department of agriculture) has actually inspected them.
• How do you handle state restrictions? Kratom is banned in a handful of states. A vendor willing to ship there anyway is telling you how they treat the rules in general.
