About the plant

Butterbur is a European wetland plant with very large rhubarb-like leaves. The English common name comes from the old practice of using those broad leaves to wrap butter in warm weather. The plant naturally contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, the same compound class that has restricted the use of comfrey and coltsfoot, so this material is sold strictly as a botanical specimen rather than for consumption. Its other characteristic constituents are the petasins.
