What is Irish Moss Powder?

Irish Moss Powder is ground dried Chondrus crispus, the red North Atlantic seaweed, milled to a powder for direct use. It is the same seaweed as our whole dried Irish Moss, ready to stir into recipes without soaking and blending.

About the seaweed

Chondrus crispus is a small red-purple alga that grows on rocky Atlantic shores in Europe and North America. It is the traditional source of carrageenan, the natural thickening polysaccharide, and coastal Irish communities long used the dried moss to set puddings such as "carrageen pudding" and as a winter food. It naturally contains iodine and minerals including magnesium, calcium, and potassium. As with the whole moss, note that "sea moss" is a broad marketing term covering several seaweeds, while true Irish moss is Chondrus crispus.
