What is Milk Thistle Powder?
Milk Thistle Powder is the ground dried seed of Silybum marianum, a tall thistle in the daisy family (Asteraceae). It is also called Holy Thistle, Mary's Thistle, and Saint Mary's Thistle.
About the plant
The plant has distinctive purple flowers and white-veined leaves; the "milk" name comes from a Christian legend that the white veining marks where the Virgin Mary's milk fell. The seeds contain silymarin, a complex of flavonolignans that is one of the most extensively researched herbal preparations in modern pharmacology. Because the seeds are bitter and oily, the powder is most often encapsulated.
