What is Skullcap Powder?

Skullcap Powder is the finely ground aerial parts of Scutellaria lateriflora, American Skullcap, a perennial in the mint family (Lamiaceae). The species name lateriflora, "side-flowering," describes the small blue flowers that emerge from one side of the stem. It is a different species from Chinese Skullcap (Scutellaria baicalensis), which has separate traditional uses.

About the plant

American Skullcap is native to damp woodland edges across eastern and central North America. It was used by various Native peoples and was adopted into nineteenth-century Eclectic Western herbalism. Its documented constituents include the flavonoids baicalein, scutellarein, and baicalin. The powder is the same plant material as the cut herb, milled for encapsulation and blending.
