About the plant

California Poppy is native to California, the western United States, and northern Mexico, where it has a long documented history of traditional use among the Native peoples of the region. Despite being a true poppy in the family Papaveraceae, it is a different genus from the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum) and contains isoquinoline alkaloids such as californidine, eschscholtzine, and protopine rather than opiate alkaloids. It is widely cultivated as an ornamental and is legal throughout the United States.
