What is a white sage smudge stick?

This is a bundle of Salvia apiana, California white sage, available in 5-inch and 9-inch lengths. When lit, it releases a sharp, herbaceous, subtly resinous smoke.

Cultural context

White sage grows in the chaparral of southwestern California and northern Baja California, and it holds documented ceremonial significance for multiple California Native cultures, including the Chumash, Cahuilla, and Kumeyaay. Smudging, the burning of aromatic plant bundles, is a documented practice in many Indigenous North American traditions. We present that history factually and with respect rather than as marketing.

Sustainability

Commercial demand for white sage has put heavy pressure on wild populations since the plant's popularity spread far beyond its traditional context. Burning sparingly, or choosing the loose-leaf format for pinch-at-a-time use, stretches a single bundle a long way.

Burning characteristics

Light the tip until a flame catches, blow it out, and let the bundle smolder over a fireproof dish. Press the lit end firmly into sand to extinguish. A bundle is made to be relit.
